Education

B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies - Health Science, at University of Hawaii at Manoa, Graduated Aug 10, 2012 GPA: 3.94 TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certificate, TEFL Institute of Chicago, Earned August 2012

Experience

I have five years of experience teaching English as a Foreign Language classes and working with second-language speakers in Ecuador. I also have over 300 hours of tutoring experience in a variety of subjects with individuals of all ages, disciplines, and language backgrounds. As a Writing Tutor at the UH Manoa Writing Center, I assisted with all stages of the writing process, from pre-writing to revising to editing. I was also a subject tutor with the UH Manoa Learning Assistance Center for three semesters, covering Physiology, Biology, Microbiology, and several 100-level humanities/social sciences classes. Through my experience and training as a tutor with the Writing Center (WC) and Learning Assistance Center (LAC), I have learned techniques that are more effective for helping students learn. Good tutors are not "answer and homework fairies," or "essay fairies." We help students develop holistically, meaning that we help students with good writing and study skills and self-efficacy, in addition to their understanding of subject content. As a tutor I am patient and respectful. My goal is to help tutees succeed in the subject, but also to encourage them, build confidence, and help them become independent, capable students. I genuinely enjoy being a tutor and it is one of the most rewarding positions I have been in. What does that mean for an actual tutoring session? For Writing tutoring, it means that we will be discussing the student's writing, ideas, the writing process, and techniques to help him/her organize and revise. For subject tutoring, it means I will ask questions to guide the person and help them understand, and as a way to confirm that knowledge. I will also try to help students relate concepts to other ideas that they might like more or understand better.
